So what? What does it matter?

This is the big one: What does it matter?

‘Even if the Messianic Law is true’ said my own brother ‘and I can see where you are coming from, in fact I agree with it but so what? Your brother-in-law asked you the same question and as far as I can see that’s the be all and end all of all questions as far as your philosophy is concerned. So answer it.’

My brother had a point, but to be honest I feel that to answer the question is an insult to everybody’s intelligence because – to me at least – the answer is obvious yet it would seem that the only thing that is obvious is that I am wrong in that assumption so here’s the answer and the answer is everything, the answer is that the world as we know it has to change because it is not the world in which we think we were living.

If the Messianic Law is right then every philosopher, theologian, politician and indeed everybody who ever did any serious thinking throughout the ages has missed the point. ‘Civilisation has evolved not out of religious values and the inherent fundamental decency, holiness, goodness, generosity, altruism (apply your own favourite noun) as religious institutionalism will have us believe, but out of total and unavoidable selfishness and that’s the reason for all the world’s social problems. Furthermore, if we don’t soon come to terms with the reality of this the Human Race will destroy itself – as sure as night follows day – within the lifetime of my own grandchildren, if and when I ever have any.

Now what I have to do is convince you that the above is not just hyperbole – bullshit to those who don’t know what hyperbole means.
